Veterinary Medical Manipulation (VMM) often referred to as “animal chiropractic” is a technique used to evaluate and restore normal motion to joints of the spine and limbs. At Ironwood Veterinary Services, Veterinary Medical Manipulation is one of the core components of our integrative sports medicine approach, helping horses move more comfortably and perform to their fullest potential.

  • Veterinary Medical Manipulation is the precise application of a controlled, specific force to a joint that has developed restricted motion.

    The goal is not to “put bones back into place.” Instead, VMM seeks to restore normal joint mobility, improve biomechanics, and support healthy communication between the musculoskeletal and nervous system.

    Healthy joints are designed to move. When that movement becomes restricted, the surrounding muscles, connective tissue, and nervous system often compensate in ways that can affect comfort and performance.

    By restoring normal motion, VMM helps the horse move more efficiently and comfortably.

  • Every VMM appointment begins with a comprehensive examination. We evaluate:

    • Overall posture and balance.

    • Gait and movement

    • Joint mobility

    • Muscle development and symmetry

    • Areas of pain or tension

    Because movement is interconnected, restrictions found in one region often influence other parts of the body. Our goal is to identify these relationships and develop a treatment plan that addresses the horse as a whole.

  • VMM may benefit:

    • Horses in regular athletic work to maintain mobility.

    • Horses returning to work or on a rehabilitation plan.

    • Senior horses to gently promote comfort and movement.

    Horses that should not receive VMM:

    • Have a history of a fracture within the last year (or longer depending on the site of the fracture, radiographs, opinion of a board certified veterinary surgeon etc.)

    • Have a recent history of trauma.
